In 1919, Louis Ingber was invited by millionaires Alpheus Geer and Hiram Mallison to manage what was then the Marshall Stillman Athletic Club. Over time, Ingber became so synonymous with the gym that patrons simply called him “Mr. Stillman.” Tired of correcting them, he eventually made it official, changing his name to Lou Stillman.
Stillman’s Gym grew into the ultimate proving ground for boxers of every rank — from up-and-comers chasing their first fight to world champions sharpening their craft. The air was thick with sweat, tension, and the hum of skipping ropes.
Writers, trainers, and fans alike came not just to watch — but to *feel* boxing in its rawest form. Stillman’s wasn’t just a gym. It was a world unto itself — equal parts theater, classroom, and battleground.
