In 1933, at just twenty-two years old, Constantine “Cus” D’Amato opened Gramercy Gym in Manhattan. What began as a modest space above a neighborhood street would become one of boxing’s most respected proving grounds.

Cus lived and breathed the fight game. In the early days he often stayed overnight in the gym, his only companion a massive boxer dog named Champ — waiting for the next young fighter to walk through the door.

That fighter arrived in 1949, when a fourteen-year-old Floyd Patterson stepped into Gramercy Gym. Under D’Amato’s guidance, Patterson would rise to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history.

From this unassuming gym, D’Amato went on to mentor legends — Floyd Patterson, José Torres, and a new generation of trainers like Teddy Atlas and Kevin Rooney — shaping the future of the sport itself.
