In the 1930s, beneath the floors of Salem Methodist Church, young fighters gathered to train with purpose. Among them was a boy named Walker Smith Jr., whose unmatched drive and speed soon revealed greatness. He would later become known to the world as Sugar Ray Robinson.
The Salem Crescent Athletic Club was more than a gym — it was a movement. It represented Harlem’s resilience and the belief that discipline could lift a generation. Community members rallied behind it, raising funds to keep its doors open as they watched champions take shape.
