Grupp's Gym

After World War I, in the heart of Harlem, Billy Grupp opened Grupp’s Gymnasium — a training ground that would quickly rise to prominence as one of New York City’s premier boxing gyms.

Grupp’s gym had everything a young fighter could hope for: natural light, open space, and an atmosphere charged with determination. It became a home for those chasing greatness, a place where sweat and sound echoed through the wooden floors day after day.

Sugar Ray Robinson and Jack Dempsey both trained here, and Robinson famously called it “Grupp’s College” — a testament to the skill, mentorship, and discipline that defined the gym’s walls.
